Ice Thickness Data
Currently, ice modelers have very little to no information regarding ice thickness on the Great Lakes. needed to verify regional ice models. The Great Lakes ice modeling community has access to satellite information to verify the ice coverage predictions, but when it comes to knowing how thick the ice is, there is very little information available to them. GLOS will attempt to help fill this data gap with community assistance, by looking to the ice fishing community. The project will count on ice fishers sharing their ice thickness measurements that will in turn help improve regional ice predictive models.
Community Ice Thickness Data Submission
GLOS has a data sharing agreement for you to review to help you understand what we are hoping to collect. If you are interested in participating, please review the form, and email Shelby Brunner to share your primary Great Lakes fishing area and receive the data submission URL.
Data Collection Webinar
GLOS will be streaming an informational webinar on Thursday, February 6th at 7 pm ET/6 pm CT to provide an overview of the proposed project, current ice modeling work and gaps, and answer questions from interested participants.
If you know of anyone who ice fishes or does other forms of ice recreation on the Great Lakes proper and may be interested in being part of this project, please share this information and links to the webinar streams via the link below.
Green Bay Workshop
GLOS will be hosting the project kick-off work shop at UW-Green Bay to share project details, and gauge interest from the ice fishing community. The workshop will include short presentations by GLOS and the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR), followed by group feedback and discussion.
Volunteers can sign up to test the system and may be eligible for stipends, upon providing data.
